A WIDOW’S MIGHT: Over 172 years of wear and tear, water damage and settling, St. Louis Cathedral -- the seat of Roman Catholicism in southeast Louisiana – has oh-so-slowly been falling apart. Now the richest person in the state is leading an unprecedented effort to restore it, at a cost likely to total tens of millions of dollars.
FLUSH WITH CASH: With the Legislature convening Monday, Louisiana’s coffers are once again flush with cash: more than a billion dollars in extra revenue that Democratic Gov. John Bel Edwards wants to spend on coastal restoration, roads, bridges and other priorities. But in the Republican-controlled House and Senate, there is some hesitancy to bust through a constitutionally mandated cap on how much the state may shell out each year. Meanwhile, four GOP candidates to succeed Edwards want to eliminate Louisiana’s income tax, which might sound nice but would be quite difficult to achieve.
