Poetry from The Writer's Almanac

Orpheus, Turning
By Faith Shearin

Faith Shearin’s first collection, The Owl Question (2004), won the May Swenson Award, and her second book, The Empty House (2008), helped earn her a grant from the National Endowment for the Arts. Her work has appeared regularly in Ploughshares, Poetry East, and North American Review, and in several anthologies, including Sweeping Beauty: Contemporary Women Poets Do Housework and The Autumn House Anthology of Contemporary American Poets. Her most recent collection, Moving the Piano (2011), was written in Kitty Hawk, North Carolina, which is part of the Outer Banks barrier islands, where Shearin spent her childhood. In the Magic Hour by Aoife O'Donovan

Listen to "Hornets" as performed on A Prairie Home Companion

Songwriter, vocalist Aoife O'Donovan grew up in a musical family in Newton, Massachusetts. In her teens, she took an interest in the American folk tradition, and she spent her summers in Ireland, studying music and dance. After graduating from the New England Conservatory of Music, she formed the progressive bluegrass band, Crooked Still.

In the Magic Hour is her second solo recording and features guests familiar to A Prairie Home Companion fans such as Chris Thile, Sara Watkins and Sarah Jarosz. Lead single "Magic Hour" displays O'Donovan's ever-evolving style and strength in songwriting. "The King of All Birds" brings a lush orchestral arrangement, odd timing, and an erratic melody that you won't soon forget. In the Magic Hour expands past Aoife's roots in Folk and Bluegrass. However, she hasn't forgotten her roots. "Stanley Park" and "Porch Light" are perfectly flowing gems.
