| Departing from Grenoble around midnight, I follow the Isère Valley to climb the Col du Glandon from its northern side. In this early spring, the road is closed, which assures me of a moment of solitude under a magnificent full moon.
The ascent is long, and piles of snow block the last bends still in the shade. I decide to cut through fields, bike on my shoulder, clinging to fence posts to avoid slipping on the frozen ground.
But what a surprise! I am not alone at the summit. An elderly man leaning on his cane addresses me like an intruder:
'- What are you doing here? -I've come to see the sunrise.'
A complicity nourished by silence immediately arises between us. But I cannot enjoy the company of this strange character, this sentinel of the peaks who arrived there I don't know how, for long; I'm already cold as I have to plunge into the valley.
In the middle of the descent towards Grenoble, I came across an open bistro. Surprisingly it was iopen at 6:30 AM and I was able to order a ham sandwich with a thick layer of butter and two hot chocolates. 'That way, you'll have the strength to climb the pass,' comments the bartender, surprised! I nod with a smile, I don't want to come back down...
