Yesterday, the 2023 legislative general session started. I know some people who look forward to this time — limbering up for Twitter with the #utpol hashtag and warming up their wrists so they can write their legislators. Others might dread this time. There are a lot of news stories to take in!
Have no fear, we’ll include coverage of all the important stories here in Utah Today.
Tell me: For you, what are some of the most important issues the Legislature will address this session?
‘She is in hopes that this case will be a wake-up call for Michael’: Police report from slain Enoch family details allegations of abuse, controlling behavior
Tuesday, the Deseret News obtained copies of police reports after a public records inquiry into the Haight family’s past interactions with law enforcement. The records point to a pattern of violent and controlling tendencies from the father, Michael Haight. Police say the 42-year-old murdered his wife, Tausha Haight; her mother, Gail Earl; and the couple’s five children before turning the gun on himself on Jan. 4, 2023.
Two years prior to the murders, on Aug. 27, 2020, police responded to the Haights’ home after allegations that Michael assaulted Macie, the couple’s oldest daughter, over several years. Included in the police reports, Tausha is reported as saying that she didn’t want to press charges, but hoped “this case will be a wake-up call for Michael.”
Lawmakers started off the 2023 general session Tuesday by highlighting the Legislature’s big priorities. House Speaker Brad Wilson said, “Coming into this session, it has become crystal clear to me that as a state ... we stand at one of those rare moments where our choices will ripple for generations.”
What are the highlights from Speaker Wilson and Senate Pres. Stuart Adams’ opening addresses? Read more here.
