The cloud has changed how—and how fast—customers can get a new feature into the software they're using. A software user can suggest a change through one of Oracle's online communities and the community votes it up or down. Because Oracle updates its cloud software multiple times a year, the most-popular new features can be added in a matter of months.
"In our last release, 80 percent of the features came from feedback directly from customers, a lot of it from online customer communities," says Chris Leone, who leads Oracle's 2,000-some developers focused on Oracle Human Capital Management Cloud.
More than 17,000 people are part of the Oracle HCM Cloud community alone, and they're not just giving Oracle ideas—they're also sharing ideas, report templates, and tips with each other. "They're saying, 'Hey, take advantage of this new succession planning feature or this new career development tool,'" Leone says. When it comes to the cloud, customers require choice. "People want to be able to work in a hybrid environment and move at their own pace," said Oracle Vice President Ashish Mohindroo during an Oracle OpenWorld 2016 session on digital disruption. Amazon Web Services (AWS) and Azure are incomplete clouds, whereas Oracle provides a complete integrated stack. "This is Oracle's biggest differentiator," he said. In a recent Harvard Business Review survey, 62 percent of the participating C-level executives cited data security in the cloud as a top concern. Certainly as you start vetting cloud providers, data security, cost, and processing power in the cloud should be examined carefully, especially in high-volume transaction environments such as telecommunications and financial services.
