Dear John,

The questions you ask have a huge impact on the person answering the questions.

Scenario:

Someone comes to you and they express a setback at work because of a relationship misunderstanding they had.

Problem focused questions:

  • How are you feeling about that?
  • Has this happened before?
  • How long has this been going on?
  • How is this impacting your work performance?
  • What happens if you don’t resolve this?

All of these questions produce a mindset doom loop for the person answering them and the focus becomes on themselves and on past events.

Possibility focused questions:

  • What relationship would you like to have with this person?
  • What is possible in this working relationship?
  • What needs to happen from you in order to improve this relationship?
  • What attitudes or skills can you develop that would make a better relationship possible?
  • What actions can you take that are in your control to improve the relationship?

All of these questions produce a mindset of possible improvements based on actions within the person's control.

The bottom line is that questions have the power to increase Fear or Faith.

When your thinking improves, your performance improves.

What questions are you asking yourself? Fear or Faith?
