In the past week, Canada added an average of 6,632 cases to its cumulative tally each day. That’s down significantly from the 8,116 daily average in the previous week that began on Jan. 5. As Dr. Theresa Tam, Canada’s chief public health officer, said during the first wave, no one sees the peak of an epidemic curve until well after it is passed. But, based on these numbers, it’s possible that we’re seeing that early decline, though not all provinces will experience such reductions. For the first time in the second wave, the weekly number of hospitalizations fell, down by 38 COVID-19 patients in the past week. That compares to an increase of 420 patients in the previous week and 516 admissions in the week before that. In the week that ended Jan. 9, a record 1,187 people died of COVID-19 in Canada, followed by another 990 in the week that ended on Jan. 16. In the past month, 3,974 Canadians have died of COVID-19.
