The statistics illustrate Winston's widespread improvement
The bye week has made for a slow week for Saints news. With players and coaches taking a much-deserved break, there's no access for interviews or injury information. So I'm going to link some of previous stories in the name of public service. Columnist Rod Walker goes behind the numbers to tell us why Jameis Winston is off to the best start of his NFL career. Is it maturity? Or the tutelage of Sean Payton? Or the LASIK surgery he had in 2019? Whatever it is, Winston has thrown 12 touchdowns to just three interceptions in the Saints' first five games. Beat writer Luke Johnson takes a look at the game of musical chairs first-year offensive line coach Brendan Nugent has been forced to play this season because of injuries to several players in his group. The unit’s ability to adapt and adjust has been a key factor in the Saints’ 3-2 start. Drew Brees was in town this week to promote a new business venture. He weighed in on the Saints' 3-2 start and Winston's evolving relationship with Sean Payton, while meeting with the local media. Our Doug MacCash was on the scene and get the story. Marshon Lattimore was named the NFC Defensive Player of the Week for the first time in his career on Wednesday. He had a career-high six passes defensed against Washington and star receiver Terry McLaurin. Beat reporter Amie Just has the story. And another honor was announced on Wednesday, this one for former Saints great Sam Mills, who will be inducted into the club’s Ring of Honor during a halftime ceremony at the Dec. 2 game against Dallas. Luke Johnson has the details. That'll do it for today. I'll have a column this weekend on listing the reasons for optimism and concerns for the Saints the rest of the way, while Rod, Luke and myself tackle a roundtable discussion on the several Saints-related topics. So make sure you keep checking NOLA.com for the latest Saints news. Thanks again for your loyal support. Until next time... Cheers, Jeff Duncan |
