The rise of LSU LB Greg Penn

Damone Clark may have seen Greg Penn coming before anyone.

Perhaps even Penn himself.

Near the end of the 2021 season, Clark predicted his friend would eventually become an All-American. Penn still has a ways to travel down that road, but Clark's faith in him hasn't wavered.

Certainly based on the way Penn has played for LSU this season, and the increasingly vital role he plays in the Tigers' defense, that faith is well deserved.

"I think the best rotation keeps Greg on the field," LSU coach Brian Kelly said.

Despite Penn's play, the Tigers' shaky defense is one of the things that keeps some LSU fans from completely buying in on Kelly in his second season as LSU's coach. That said, I thought it was a good time to look back at the 2021 coaching search and see who LSU might have wound up with if Kelly hadn't taken the job. Remember some of those names?

The SEC released its 2023-24 women's basketball TV schedule Wednesday, with 17 of LSU's games currently set for ESPN, ESPN2 or the SEC Network. TV plans for one more game, LSU's Nov. 6 season opener in Las Vegas against Colorado, are still pending.

Speaking of women's basketball, former LSU great Seimone Augustus was announced Wednesday as one of nine people who comprise the Class of 2024 being enshrined in the Louisiana Sports Hall of Fame. Former Saints quarterback Drew Brees headlines the list.

LSU plays Saturday at Ole Miss (5 p.m., ESPN). Our Reed Darcey gives us his four "Keys to the V" for the Tigers. Our Sheldon Mickles is also here with his weekly SEC power rankings and his look at the top five games of the weekend in college football.

That's all for now, folks. Thank you as always for reading and subscribing. You're top five in our book. What am I saying? You're No. 1.

I'd better stop now before your eyes roll back any farther than they already have.
