| The salmon are running on Big Elk Creek! By now, the pools should be full of bright red salmon. |

Fun Things to do Before the Snow Falls |
Yeah, I know--the snow might not fall where you live. Still, there are lots of things to do in the cooler weather. The salmon are running up Big Elk Creek in Eastern Idaho. They just started so they should be spectacular for a couple weeks. The leaves are starting to turn in the high country but they may not be so in your area. Winding country roads in the fall are memorable. When we lived in Minnesota, we would visit farmers to buy apples and small towns for whatever treasures we could find. Last fall, we wandered through the lonely Grey's Lake area nestled against the Wyoming border. We got so lost we had to flag down a rancher to get help getting out. Last fall, when the first snow hit the high country, Merri Ann and I climbed a canyon until we were in the snow. It was spectacular: a fresh dusting of snow clinging to the cliffs, white snow stacked on green pines, and red from the maples and sumacs draped with snow. It was the hike of the year. Wherever you live, there are fun things to do this time of year. |
