Dear Reader,

For all the fanfare around Britain’s efficient vaccine rollout, Boris Johnson was remarkably keen this week to insist that the success of controlling Covid-19 was down to the lockdown and not inoculations. It’s a key justification for prolonging restrictions. So was he right to say so? Sarah Knapton digs into the data and concludes that science has proven the Prime Minister wrong.

On Saturday, we will be publishing a special commemorative magazine dedicated to the life of the Duke of Edinburgh. Ahead of the weekend, you can see this wonderful collection of pictures and read the stories behind them. They give a remarkable insight into Prince Philip’s life: public and private, ceremonial and personal. It’s also the case that, since his passing, many of us have learnt things about the Duke that we didn’t know before. Allison Pearson touchingly writes about the lessons that we can all take from him.

With barbershops and hair salons reopened, the British public finally has the chance to restore some order to their personal image. For a few individuals, however, there is the temptation to retain some of the enforced changes of lockdown. In this piece, Lisa Armstrong contemplates whether it’s finally time to stop dying her hair and embrace “Full Grey”, and asks if society is as progressive as it thinks about the signs of ageing.
