Good morning, and welcome to the Saints Insider newsletter for Tuesday, January 24. Monday was a busy day for former New Orleans Saints coach Sean Payton. He reportedly completed an interview with the Carolina Panthers while also agreeing to interview for the Arizona Cardinals job as well as scheduling a second interview for the Denver Broncos job. If you're keeping track, that means Payton has either interviewed with or has set up an interview for four of the five open NFL head coaching positions. Predictably, the former Saints head coach is in high demand. But, as our columnist Jeff Duncan points out, it might already be too late for three of those teams. as all signs point toward the Broncos being the leader of the pack. As Duncan points out in his column, Payton has made it clear from the start that he values competence at the highest levels of the organization, citing "ownership and the functionality of the front office" as the most important factors in his search for a new team. That might have the Broncos sitting in pretty in the race to acquire his services. This is all important, of course, because the Saints are going to reap some immediate benefits if Payton agrees to coach another team in 2023. Whomever hires Payton is going to have to compensate the Saints, likely with one or more high draft picks, as Payton's contract with the Saints is still valid for two more years. Keep it locked to Nola.com, as we'll closely monitor the Payton situation as it unfolds this week. Thanks, as always, for your readership. Cheers, Luke Johnson |
