Employee shortage ongoing challenge for defense sector

Weapons deliveries are being slowed due to a lack of skilled employees even as affects from the coronavirus pandemic recede, defense leaders say. "I think the only thing that's going to solve labor availability, I hate to say this, is a slowdown in the economy. Because right now, there just simply aren't enough people in the workforce for all of our suppliers," said Raytheon Technologies CEO Greg Hayes.

Female leaders have a leg up on their male counterparts, says former marketing executive Dalia Feldheim, because they practice traits including passion, purpose, perspective and a positivity that evokes empathy. "It's about something I call 'emotional bravery,' which goes way beyond emotional intelligence -- it allows emotions and empathy to come out," says Feldheim, who led Procter & Gamble's Always #LikeAGirl campaign.

Mark Zuckerberg gets transparently aggressive

If a recent company call is any indication, Mark Zuckerberg wants everyone at Meta to buckle down and brace themselves as the company retools its business and work culture. It's pretty jarring when a leader says, "Realistically, there are probably a bunch of people at the company who shouldn't be here." That means getting rid of the "coasters" and focusing on the people helping Meta achieve its vision, even if that means enduring some pain and sacrifice along the way.

The average retirement age of Americans has increased from 57 in 1991 to 61 this year, and the planned retirement age has increased from 60 in 1995 to 66 today, according to Gallup's annual Economy and Personal Finance survey. The gap between actual and planned retirement ages suggest that people are leaving employment due to employer changes or because of unexpected health or family situations.

The part of Robinson's story that is often told first is how he broke the color barrier in Major League Baseball, but his legacy also includes being the VP of a fortune 500 company, a political advisor and an important figure in the Civil Rights Movement.
