The Serious Business of Rest

I just returned from vacation. My family and I spent five relaxing days (well, as relaxing as they can be with three small children) biking, swimming, and lazing around a rented condo. The break came just in time. Before the vacation, I found myself checking out, staring blankly at my computer, putting off important tasks, and struggling to keep up with email. Now I’m back, tackling my to-do list with renewed energy.

I needed a break.

We all do. We tend to think of rest as optional, even a luxury, but it’s essential. That’s why this week we’re featuring Rest and Renewal for Busy Church Leaders. In this resource, John Ortberg, Ruth Haley Barton, and Mindy Caliguire provide wisdom on finding a steady rhythm, using your downtime well, and rediscovering energy and rest.

Also, check out this piece in which Matthew Lapine asks, “How can we shepherd angry, anxious, or hurting people?” The answer for Lapine came from an ancient source: Thomas Aquinas. Read the article here.

Rest and Renewal for Busy Church Leaders
When was the last time you felt really, truly refreshed? Between late night committee meetings, weekends of services, and round-the-clock availability for counseling and crises, the demands of ministry all too often leave leaders feeling physically exhausted and spiritually limp. While we all know the importance of rest and renewal, it can be difficult to allow ourselves to take time out of our day to rest and renew our bodies and souls.
