Should Mitt Romney run for reelection in 2024?

According to the latest Deseret News/Hinckley Institute of Politics poll, a little over half of Utahns don’t think Sen. Mitt Romney should run for re-election in 2024.

By the numbers:

• Romney has a slightly higher approval rating (48.9%) than disapproval rating (46.9%).
• 51.3% of those polled said he should definitely or probably not seek re-election.
• In 2011, 54% of voters wanted the late Sen. Orrin Hatch to retire, but he won by a landslide in the 2012 GOP primary and general elections.

What Jim Curry, a University of Utah political science professor had to say about the poll:

• “What you see is a phenomenon of when you’re far away from the election and the candidate is old or maybe not the person you love the most in the world, right now the hypothetical of do you want this guy around or not turns into a no. But that doesn’t mean anything about what’s going to happen come Election Day two years down the line.”
