Hello from Davos, where Donald Trump — unpopular and impeached as he is — showed why Democrats are worried about November. He ignored inconvenient realities, exaggerated wildly, and focused on the economic growth and low unemployment that America has enjoyed.

Climate politics: One thing that was clear this week is how the opposition to action on climate has shifted. The Davos crowd and House Republicans now acknowledge the problem, and have found a politically easy (if inadequate) solution in planting trees. Trump even said, in response to my question, that he doesn’t think climate change is a “hoax” anymore. But he warned that Democrats’ plans would disrupt Americans’ lives, and his bet is that Americans aren’t up for that.

Rashida Tlaib

Rashida Tlaib is the firebrand, charismatic Congress member from Michigan who achieved immortality (and spoke for many Democrats) when she demanded that Congress “impeach the motherfucker.” She’s a proud member of the Democratic Socialists of America and a committed Bernie Sanders supporter, headed to Iowa next week to do her part for him. We texted about all those things, and about her Palestinian roots, which came into politics recently when the Israeli government said it would deny her a visa.

RASHIDA TLAIB: Hi Ben! Glad to be speaking with you! Trying to text you while working and being a mom right now to my 8 year old who is having a moment. BEN SMITH: Hmm BuzzFeed usually plays well with that demographic. So I'm (embarrassingly) texting you from Davos, where Trump was talking about the impeachment ''hoax'' today. Do you feel vindicated that it's finally happening?

RASHIDA TLAIB: On serious note here, if the Senators truly believe in our democracy and the law of the land (you know, the U.S. Constitution), then they would put our country before an individual. Especially one who isn't good at his job. BEN SMITH: Moving over to the presidential campaign, I promised Denzel I'd start with an issue you've worked on a lot, housing, which is also huge fro our audience. Do you think the candidates are talking about that enough?

RASHIDA TLAIB: They aren't talking about structural racism and poverty enough which is at the core of why so many of my neighbors are paying between 30% to 50% of their income towards rent. BEN SMITH: Is Bernie? RASHIDA TLAIB: Bernie is the only one very centered on working families that are frontline communities suffering the most from doing nothing around poverty (wages, education quality, housing). He speaks about the truth which is that corporate greed is ruining this country and we need someone not afraid of taking them on. He won't sell us out.

RASHIDA TLAIB: When he spent a day in my district, he really listened and saw firsthand how families were being impacted with no access to water.

RASHIDA TLAIB: He looked in the eyes of high school kids and without hesitation said we (not I) will fix it. This is about all of us and a larger movement. BEN SMITH: You're headed to Iowa for him next week. How do you convince people who aren't with him -- maybe more centrist Dems -- to switch over to him?

RASHIDA TLAIB: They will fell what I have felt. He is the only one courageous enough to take on the health care industry, fossil fuel corporations and others who have bought their way into Congress, The White House, and our entire government. Bernie's running a true grassroots campaign and that's what we need to move our country in the right direction. Plus we are winning just having Bernie in this presidential campaign. He is forcing conversations to happen on the national level.

ARTICLE EXCERPT READING: In 1963, I lived on a kibbutz near Haifa. It was there that I saw and experienced for myself many of the progressive values upon which Israel was founded. I think it is very important for everyone, but particularly for progressives, to acknowledge the enormous achievement of establishing a democratic homeland for the Jewish people after centuries of displacement and persecution.

BEN SMITH: Finally, I know Bernie's position on Palestine has been important to you. But I wondered what you think about his view that Israel has a progressive tradition that progressives should honor?

RASHIDA TLAIB: What I know now is that my Sity (grandmother) doesn't have equal rights and is dehumanized every day living under illegal occupation. Bernie understands that reality and speaks out against that form of injustice. What he and I agree the most on is that the truth had to be at the core of addressing the human rights violations. We won't have peace without it. BEN SMITH: Is there a path for progressives to embrace, or accept, Israel?

RASHIDA TLAIB: I believe we should not rest until everyone in Israel and Palestine lives with human dignity and freedom. Progressive Palestinians, Israelis, Americans, and others work together in solidarity to resist Israeli military occupation every day. I'm inspired by those folks.
