March meeting of College Council

College Council met on Thursday March 21. Key items included a compliance mechanism for Ontario Certified Teachers who have yet to complete the Sexual Abuse Prevention Program, consequential amendments related to the government’s reintroduction of the Math Proficiency Test, and proposed changes to leadership pathways and technological education qualification requirements.

Learn about the findings of a new study of Ontario Certified Teachers

The College’s first Focus on Teaching: A Survey of Ontario Certified Teachers report is now available. The report provides data on demographic and identity data information highlighting the diverse representation among teachers who responded to the survey.

Focus on Teaching replaces the College’s Transition to Teaching report, which gathered information about employment patterns and experiences of Ontario Certified Teachers (OCTs) in the first five years of their career. It was published annually between 2002 and 2023. You can view previous reports on the College website. Certain questions from Transition to Teaching were also included in Focus on Teaching to continue to gather data needed to capture trends.

Meet Sanya Cardoza, OCT

Sanya Cardoza is the 2023 recipient of the Joseph W. Atkinson Scholarship for Excellence in Teacher Education.

Named in honour of the College’s second Registrar & CEO, the scholarship recognizes a teacher candidate’s outstanding preparedness for teacher education and perseverance in achieving their academic and social goals while they pursue a career in the teaching profession.

While maintaining an impressive GPA, Sanya co-authored a research paper exploring supportive environments for women in STEM, as well as another research paper focusing on student perspectives in educational practices.

Each year, the College Scholarship Program awards four $1,500 scholarships to exemplary candidates enrolled in a teacher education program in Ontario.

Private tutoring

Parents and guardians who are considering hiring a private tutor may consider hiring an Ontario Certified Teacher (OCT).

Members of the profession designated as OCTs are certified and qualified educators who are licensed to teach in Ontario’s public and independent schools.

While most OCTs work in education, some choose to work in other sectors.

Visit our public register, Find a Teacher, to see the qualifications of every Ontario Certified Teacher, including their specialized training in the form of Additional Qualifications (AQs).

Please note that instruction employment oppurtunities are outside of the College’s regulatory mandate. We are unable to connect OCTs to individuals who are looking for private instruction.
