Carson Wentz, who is looking to continue a pretty impressive streak.
Wentz enters play in Week 9 with multiple passing touchdowns in six straight games, the second-longest active streak in the NFL behind Aaron Rodgers, who has done it in seven straight. Not so bad for a guy the Eagles couldn't wait to get rid of in the offseason.
Wentz isn't quite recapturing his MVP-caliber form, but he's benefited from a much better offensive line than he had last season plus a run-heavy approach in Indianapolis that has set him up with plenty of short fields, and he ranks fifth with 24 pass attempts from inside the 10-yard line. He's turned eight of those into touchdowns, but he's also benefited from having some surprisingly good playmaking around him, thanks to the emergence of Michael Pittman as a legitimate No. 1 WR and, of course, Jonathan Taylor's home-run hitting ways.
But the context wouldn't matter if Wentz wasn't playing much better than we saw in 2020. And now he gets to take on a Jaguars defense that has only been decent against quarterbacks for Fantasy because teams are up big early so often against them. Given the way this season has played out, if the Colts take a big lead, Wentz is going to play a big part, just like he did last week against the Jets
For more on why Jamey is in on Wentz, you can read his full Start 'Em & Sit 'Em column here. In the rest of today's newsletter, I'm highlighting some of Jamey's favorite start calls and some of the players he'd rather keep on the bench for each position.
Tomorrow morning, you'll get your typical Fantasy Football Today newsletter, featuring Dave Richard's Start/Sit picks, updates on all the injuries you need to know about for Week 9, and a preview of Thursday's game between the Jets and the Colts.
But that's all for tomorrow morning. For now, here's who Jamey is starting and sitting this week:
Start 'Em: Matt Ryan and Russell Wilson
"Ryan had a rough game in Week 8 against Carolina with seven Fantasy points, but he rebounded last week at New Orleans with 31 points. He's now scored at least 21 Fantasy points in four of his past five games, and we should view the Panthers game as an aberration. Calvin Ridley (personal) is out again, but you can still trust Ryan in this matchup. Dallas has allowed an average of 22.3 Fantasy points per game to opposing quarterbacks, and four quarterbacks have scored at least 23 points against the Cowboys this season."
Sit 'Em: Ryan Tannehill and Baker Mayfield
"In the first game without Derrick Henry (foot) in Week 9 at the Rams, we didn't see much difference from the Titans offense. Their running back trio of D'Onta Foreman, Jeremy McNichols and Adrian Peterson combined for 22 carries, and Tannehill was under 30 pass attempts for the fifth time in the past seven games. As a result, Tannehill scored just 15 Fantasy points. We'll see if anything changes against the Saints, who allow an average of just 18.8 Fantasy points per game to opposing quarterbacks, but Tannehill isn't worth starting in one-quarterback leagues this week. For the season, he's averaging just 17.9 Fantasy points per game."
Start 'Em: D'ernest Johnson and Devin Singletary
"Nick Chubb (illness) is likely out this week after being placed on the reserve/COVID-19 list. With Kareem Hunt (calf) still on injured reserve, that means Johnson will once again be in the spotlight for the Browns. We saw this in Week 7 against Denver when Johnson started, and he finished with 22 carries for 146 yards and a touchdown, along with two catches for 22 yards on two targets. This won't be an easy matchup against the Patriots, but six running backs have scored at least 12 PPR points against New England in the past five games. I like Johnson as a top 15 running back this week if Chubb is out."
Sit 'Em: Adrian Peterson and Jordan Howard
"Peterson made his Titans debut in Week 9 at the Rams and looked like a 36-year-old running back playing in his first game this season. He had 10 carries for 21 yards and a touchdown, and he added one catch for 5 yards on one target. He shared playing time with Jeremy McNichols and D'Onta Foreman, and I like McNichols the best of that trio in this matchup. The Saints are No. 5 in fewest Fantasy points allowed to running backs, and only six running backs have scored against New Orleans this year."
Start 'Em: Tyler Lockett and Jaylen Waddle
"Lockett comes off his bye with Russell Wilson (finger) back for the Seahawks, and hopefully the two can connect in a big way again. Lockett had at least 26 PPR points in two of the four games Wilson finished this season, and there should be some chances for Wilson and Lockett to connect down the field this week against a potentially weakened Packers secondary due to injuries. I like Lockett as a solid No. 2 Fantasy receiver in all leagues."
Sit 'Em: Courtland Sutton and Jarvis Landry
"In three games with Jerry Jeudy on the field this season, Sutton has been a non-factor. He's combined for four catches, 63 yards and no touchdowns on just nine targets in those three outings, and Sutton has also been outplayed by Tim Patrick in the past two games. It's tough to trust Sutton this week against the Eagles, who have been great this season at limiting big plays down the field. Philadelphia is No. 5 in fewest Fantasy points allowed to opposing receivers, and Sutton and Patrick could be limited this week, while Jeudy likely thrives. I would only use Sutton as a low-end No. 3 Fantasy receiver in most formats. "
Start 'Em: Pat Freiermuth
"My guy Freiermuth did it again in Week 9 against the Bears with five catches for 43 yards and two touchdowns on six targets, and he's now scored at least 12 PPR points in three games in a row. Since JuJu Smith-Schuster (shoulder) went down for the Steelers, Freiermuth has at least six targets in each outing, and he should continue to be a go-to option for Ben Roethlisberger, especially in the red zone. I wouldn't be surprised if Freiermuth scores again in Week 10 against the Lions."
Sit 'Em: Hunter Henry
"Henry is going to need to score to save your Fantasy production. Now, thankfully, he's found the end zone in five of the past six games. But he has just seven catches in his past four outings, and he's been at 33 yards or less in each game over that span. We'll see if Jonnu Smith (shoulder) is healthy this week, which could help Henry if Smith is out, but the Browns have allowed just two touchdowns to opposing tight ends since Week 1."
Start 'Em: Cardinals vs. CAR
"We'll see if things change for the Panthers with P.J. Walker starting in place of the injured Sam Darnold (shoulder), but Carolina's offense has struggled of late. The Panthers have scored just 28 points as a team in the past three weeks against the Giants, Falcons and Patriots, with seven sacks allowed, one fumble and four interceptions over that span. Meanwhile, the Cardinals defense has 13 sacks in their past four games against Cleveland, Houston, Green Bay and San Francisco, with two interceptions and five fumble recoveries in those outings. Arizona also has allowed 17 points or less in three of those games over that span."
Sit 'Em: Chiefs at LV
"The Chiefs DST was solid in Week 9 against Green Bay. The unit held the Packers to seven points with Jordan Love starting for Aaron Rodgers (illness), and Kansas City got one sack, one interception and a fumble recovery in that game. But the Raiders should provide a tougher test at home, and the Chiefs DST is not a recommended Fantasy option. The Raiders average 24.5 points per game as a team, and Carr has been sacked just three times in the past three games. "
