The Subtle Signs of Burnout

This week I spoke to a group of ministry leaders. One of the topics I covered was burnout. To help the church leaders recognize the warning signs, I shared a post by Carey Niewhof on the 9 Signs You’re Burning Out in Leadership.

After getting through the list, one of the leaders shot her hand in the air. “I got 8 out of 9!” she announced with mock enthusiasm. We all laughed. “It’s not a contest,” I said.

The grim humor reflected a harsh reality. The pandemic has a lot of leaders on the edge of burnout. I’d encourage you to read Niewhof’s list and reflect on the state of your own soul. A little self-care now can go a long way to avoid bigger problems down the road. Also, check out our comprehensive resource on the topic: How to Prevent Ministry Burnout. It will help keep your priorities in order, your integrity high, and your attitude positive when things get tough.
