Good news for the week of February 23

Bocchi the Rock!

Good News is a weekly collection of stories from this week about things that were actually pretty nice. From pop culture to maybe even some politics, we all deserve a dose of good news.

Sometimes, good news comes late. But the good news does indeed arrive eventually.

TV, Disney+, Rivals

‘Rivals’ season 2 release window, cast, plot, and more

Alex Hassell as Rupert Campbell-Black and Bella Maclean as Taggie O'Hara in 'Rivals'

I haven’t been able to stop thinking about Rivals since I watched it in December. This show is so deliciously seductive, filled with gossip, drama, scandals,’80s fashion, comedy, messy characters, power struggles, sex, and gorgeous countryside views.

You can imagine how happy I was when Disney officially confirmed that Rivals would return for season 2.

Entertainment News, P Diddy, Sean Diddy Combs

‘Defended 9/11 but quit Diddy’: Netizens speechless after P. Diddy’s lawyer drops his case

Sean "Diddy" Combs performs

Jaws dropped when the news broke that Sean Diddy Combs’ lawyer, Anthony Ricco, left Diddy’s legal team. Since being arrested in connection with dozens of cases of abuse and trafficking, the music mogul has been reviled by the internet. These sentiments have been aggravated now that Diddy’s lawyer has left him behind.

“Although I have provided Sean Combs with the high level of legal representation expected by the court, under no circumstances can I continue to effectively serve as counsel for Sean Combs,” Anthony Ricco explained in a federal court affidavit. Ricco refused to divulge further information regarding his decision to quit as a member of Diddy’s council. This largely has to do with attorney-client privilege. The technicalities made social media users speculate why Ricco would drop the case, given the lack of details in his statement.

‘Cringe AF’: Elon Musk’s CPAC stunt is torn apart by the internet

Elon Musk being interviewed at CPAC 2025

Tech billionaire Elon Musk drew the internet’s ire for standing on stage with Argentine President Javier Milei with a chainsaw. Instead of condemning Musk, Milei clapped in awe.

Normally, presidents all over the globe wouldn’t be standing near armed men while delivering speeches. But Milei, a right-wing populist, isn’t so concerned, as he gave the customized chainsaw to Elon Musk himself. At the 2025 Conservative Party Action Conference (CPAC), Milei attended and gifted the notorious chainsaw to Musk, whom he referred to as his friend. The fully functioning chainsaw had “Vive la libertad, carajo” (long live liberty, d*mn it) engraved on it, which was Milei’s 2023 campaign slogan.

TV, Grosse Pointe Garden Society, murder mystery, NBC

‘Grosse Pointe Garden Society’ review: A fun, low-stakes, undemanding murder mystery

Ben Rappaport, Aja Naomi King and AnnaSophie Robb stand in a garden in 'Grosse Pointe Garden Society'

Considering the large number of murder satire stories about rich people these days, I found it bold of NBC to make another with Grosse Pointe Garden Society. There’s The White Lotus, No Good Deed, Rivals, Dead to Me, Little White Lies, The Afterparty, Only Murders in the Building, etc. To throw in another on this waning trend is a risk. Did it pay off?

Although Grosse Pointe Garden Society likely won’t be sweeping the Emmys or Critics Choice Awards, I found the laidback comedic styling and storytelling relaxing. As much as I adore The White Lotus, watching it takes energy.

‘Surface’: Gugu Mbatha-Raw talks about her ‘weekly wet’ on set and teases greater betrayals and deeper secrets in season 2

Gugu Mbatha-Raw as Sophie in 'Surface' season 2

The Apple TV+ amnesia mystery Surface is gearing up to push audiences to the edge of their seats with its highly anticipated season 2.

After recollecting fragments of her lost memory through her husband and close friends, Sophie (Gugu Mbatha-Raw) is leaving the San Francisco Bay area for good. In the new season, she will take her search for answers across the Atlantic to London, and finally uncover the mystery of the woman in her visions, Eliza (Millie Brady).

Gaming, layoffs, Marvel Rivals

‘Marvel Rivals’ layoffs are a telltale sign of the video game industry’s hypocrisy

Spider-Man in 'Marvel Rivals'

The games industry has been hit with over 20,000 layoffs since 2023. It feels like new announcements of team reductions and studio closures roll out every week or so. With an industry in crisis, you would expect major success stories to stick out and be rewarded. Marvel Rivals, NetEase’s hero shooter, which was released in December 2024 and has made $2.9 billion this quarter alone, is one such runaway success story—an increasingly rare one in the video games industry.

This is why everyone was blindsided when NetEase laid off the game’s director and the entire U.S. team on February 18, 2025.

‘The levels of irony here are astonishing’: ‘The Apprentice’ director under fire for allegedly groping an A-List actor

Maria Bakalova and Sebastian Stan in 'The Apprentice'

Amid an already controversy-laden 2025 awards season, The Apprentice director Ali Abbasi has found himself at the center of a scandal after he allegedly groped an A-list actor during a Golden Globes event.

The Apprentice is many things, but a proverbial “pass” to sexually harass your colleagues probably isn’t one of them—as a matter of fact, that kind of goes against the whole message of the film, which explores the exploitative relationship between Donald Trump (Sebastian Stan) and his mentor, Roy Coen (Jeremy Strong). The semi-biopic is currently nominated for two Academy Awards in the Best Supporting Actor and Best Actor categories.

Anime, TV, anime, Dragon Ball, Dragon Ball Daima

How many episodes will be in ‘Dragon Ball DAIMA’?

Dragon Ball Daima

Dragon Ball DAIMA is a love letter to the fans who grew up watching the classic Dragon Ball GT, inviting them to relive their childhood through an all-new, yet familiar, adventure. Paired with the bittersweet label of being the last story in the franchise to be written by Akira Toriyama, it’s no wonder fans are rallying behind these pint-sized heroes, hoping their adventures never truly come to an end.

For those who’ve been religiously following the Dragon Ball universe since the beginning, DAIMA feels like coming home—one last time. The series first hit the television and streaming platforms in Oct. 2024, seven months after Toriyama passed away. But with Toriyama deeply involved in crafting new episodes for the series, it was inevitable that the adventure would conclude soon, as no one else could continue weaving the magic of DAIMA the way he did.

Blake Lively pleads for protections against Justin Baldoni’s ‘violent, profane, and threatening’ messages

Blake Lively and Ryan Reynolds have requested a stronger protective order after reportedly receiving a number of "violent" communications.
Movies & TV, TV, British, British crime dramas, Father Brown, Mark Williams

‘Father Brown’ season 13 release window, cast, plot, and more

Criminals in the fictional village of Kembleford, located in the Cotswolds, England, might want to think twice before committing any offenses—Father Brown will continue to be on the case for season 13.

This long-running cozy mystery series from across the pond is based on the short stories of G. K. Chesterton. Fans have come to love the title character played by Mark Williams, a Roman Catholic priest who solves crimes. The series first premiered in 2013 and has been a mainstay on the BBC and BritBox ever since.

Movies & TV, TV, Adam Brody, Kristen Bell, Netflix, Nobody Wants This

‘Nobody Wants This’ season 2 release window, cast, plot, and more

Kristen Bell as Joanne and Adam Brody as Noah eat ice cream in the streets in Nobody Wants This

More like everybody wants this right? The hit Netflix show was created by Erin Foster and is based on her real life experiences falling in love with husband Simon Tikhman. The plot centers on Noah (Adam Brody), an attractive and unconventional rabbi, and Joanne (Kristen Bell), an agnostic sex podcaster. When the two meet at a mutual friend’s dinner party, their chemistry is magnetic. There’s just the small issue of religious differences but hey -the course to true love never did run smooth.

When will Nobody Wants This season 2 be released?

Actress Jackie Tohn who plays Ester told Deadline that filming for season 2 is scheduled to begin in March 2025. She mused it’s been a “whirlwind” but she is grateful for the experience.

“It sort of feels like we haven’t stopped since season 1, because we came out and then we were doing press,” she explained. “Then we were sort of thrust right into awards season, which was sort of insane that we were even included in that conversation. And now, we’re starting season 2 already.”

The good news about this fast pace is that Netflix announced in October of 2024 that season 2 would be out in 2025. It is safe to assume that it will be the later half of the year.

Recently, Death in Paradise’s newest lead detective confirmed that the viewers would be returning to the tropical and fictional island paradise of Saint Marie for a fifteenth season. Though Don Gilet, who plays grumpy yet vulnerable and clever Detective Inspector Mervin Wilson has only been seen in a few episodes so far, there’s no denying his arrival has shaken up the island’s small yet effective police force.

So, what will happen in Death in Paradise season 15? Read on to find out.

Another Simple Favor officially has a release date for when the film will hit streaming platforms! The highly anticipated sequel to A Simple Favor, which was originally announced in May 2022 and stars Blake Lively, Anna Kendrick, and Henry Golding, is officially upon us.

The first film, based on Darcey Bell’s novel of the same name, follows two mothers, Stephanie (Kendrick) and Emily (Lively), who form an unlikely friendship. Things take a turn in their friendship when Emily suddenly goes missing, and Stephanie leads the search to find her. However, some hidden secrets are discovered along the way.

Books, Opinion, TV, Fourth Wing, Prime Video, Rebecca Yarros

I’m just going to say it—I do not want a ‘Fourth Wing’ TV show

Fourth Wing cover art for the paperback version, with gold text on a black background.

I’m willing to bet this is a controversial opinion, but I do not want Prime Video—or any streamer, really—to make a Fourth Wing TV show.

Logically speaking, I understand why Amazon is so intent on adapting Fourth Wing. Rebecca Yarros’ Empyrean books are some of the best-selling adult fantasy novels of all time, and they are beloved for a reason. I won’t sit here and tell you they are my all-time favorite books. That’s simply not true, but I have mostly enjoyed reading them (I’m still waiting for my airport paperback version of Onyx Storm to be delivered when my parents visit at the end of this month. My books need to match, okay? It’s a Thing). Xaden is hot, Violet is a reasonably solid FMC, and I’d honestly read a book that’s only about Tairn. I do love a good dragon.

TV, Gabby Petito, Netflix

Netflix’s ‘American Murder’ shows how even a woman in uniform let Gabby Petito down

Gabby Petito smiling happily in a cave. The image featured in Netflix's American Murder: Gabby Petito documentary

The new Gabby Petito documentary exposes more police failures, with the female officer’s inaction standing out. The female cop in Netflix’s American Murder: Gabby Petito was a bystander, not an advocate. She overlooked Petito’s distress, never asked, “Are you safe?” and upheld a system that ultimately failed the victim.

For anyone who has followed this case closely, the body cam footage from the documentary is painful to watch. The police were called in because a witness saw Brian Laundrie slapping and hitting Petito. By the time officers arrived, Laundrie was the one smiling and calm, while Petito was visibly distressed, crying, and shaking. Despite this, the officers, including the lone female cop, immediately leaned toward viewing Laundrie as the victim.

Movies, Opinion, Natalie Portman, Nicole Kidman

Don’t use Nicole Kidman’s feminism to slam other women

Screenshot of Nicole Kidman drinking a glass of milk in A24's Babygirl

Nicole Kidman vowed in 2017 that she would support female directors as much as possible and work with as many as possible. At the time, she told Deadline, “I’m in a place, at this stage in my life, where I can support female directors over and over again. It’s a very conscious choice. I’m not gonna go for two or three years without working with a woman. I will seek them out and will continue to do it because that’s part of what I feel is important right now.”

So, she started picking female-led projects, like the recent Babygirl, which was directed and written by Halina Reijn and released last year. Because Kidman is such an impressively prolific actress, she’s worked with 19 female directors in the past eight years.

‘We are the federal law’: Trump threatens to strip state funding if governors don’t comply to his word

Trump pointing at a reporter in the Oval Office in front of a portrait of Ronald Reagan.

President Trump was challenged right to his face at the White House Friday afternoon, and he didn’t seem to like it very much, especially because the challenger happened to be a woman – the Governor of Maine, to be exact. Gov. Janet Mills.

In a clip that’s quickly gone viral, Trump stood at a lectern and talked about banning trans women from men’s sports. “The NCAA has complied immediately by the way,” he said. “That’s good, but I understand Maine…” he pauses for a beat. “Is Maine here? The Governor of Maine?”
