Keeping up with the winners of the Academy Awards is important! So if you want to know who wins in each category, we’ve got you covered.
It is cinema’s biggest night and this year, it has a lot of eyes on it. Mainly because the award season push has been on the messier side. For the first time in a long while, movie critics, fans, and more are unsure of what movie is going to take home the big prize of the night. Will Anora have a surprise sweep? Will Emilia Pérez win it all despite harsh criticism against the film and Karla Sofía Gascón racist tweets?
Haikyu!! is expected to release its final movie in 2025, much to the dismay of fans around the world. Needless to say, audiences aren’t convinced that one last film can cover the remaining chapters of the beloved volleyball manga.
The long-awaited Haikyu!! The Dumpster Battle finally graced cinemas worldwide in 2024—this was supposedly the second-to-last movie for the series. It featured the iconic battle between Nekoma and Karasuno at the Spring Tournament. After a grueling three-set battle between the crows and the cats, Karasuno achieved an emotional win and is heading to the quarterfinals. Karasuno will now be facing Kamomedai High. Shoyo Hinata, the series’ beloved main character, is about to meet his match in another “little giant” from the opposing team.
Daredevil: Born Again is almost here. Nearly seven (seven!) years after Daredevil season 3 premiered on Netflix, Charlie Cox will again lead a Marvel project as the Devil of Hell’s Kitchen. Daredevil is one of my favorite shows of all time, and honestly, if Born Again is even half as good as the original series, I’ll never shut up about it.
Now, I’ll admit that I’ve had doubts about this series. It went through seemingly thousands of changes behind the scenes—at one point, Matt Murdock’s best friends, Karen (Deborah Ann Woll) and Foggy (Elden Henson), weren’t even meant to be a part of it. Thankfully, though, in 2023, Daredevil: Born Again’s current showrunner, Dario Scardapane—an executive producer on Netflix’s The Punisher—came on the scene, and Born Again became more of a continuation of the original series rather than a full-on MCU-ified reboot. He fought for Karen and Foggy to be included, too. When he recently spoke to Empire, Scardapane revealed he “wouldn’t have done the show without them.” A hero, if there ever was one.
The skit features James Austin Johnson as Trump. Sitting next to him is a rather distressed Mikey Day, who played Zelenskyy. Rounding out the skit’s cast were Bowen Yang playing Vice President JD Vance and Marcello Hernández as Secretary of State Marco Rubio. Of course, the skit wouldn’t be complete without Mike Myers popping up in the scene as Elon Musk.
English TV presenter and author Richard Osman has written one of the most beloved and popular modern murder mystery series. The Thursday Murder Club novels have become worldwide bestsellers, and now, a Netflix film adaptation of the first Thursday Murder Club novel in the series is on the way, too.
If you’re a fan of British murder mysteries and love a good, cozy story, the Thursday Murder Club books are a must-read. The characters might be pensioners, but these stories are for everyone, offering funny, thrilling, and original narratives—and, of course, a whole bunch of murder, too.
Remember the good old days when your parents would read you a fantastical book before bedtime? They’d even do all the voices! Good times. The only downside was that they would eventually decide to stop reading—something about it being a “school night.” Whatever, man. Audiobooks are even better than that display of parental love because now, as a full-fledged adult, YOU decide when you want to stop listening. Do you want to stay up until 4 AM on a Monday listening to a magical tale? You can do whatever you want with these 10 best fantasy audiobooks of all time.
The Blacktongue Thief by Christopher Buehlman
Narrated by Christopher Buehlman
(Tor Books)
From the author of the modern dark fantasy classic Between Two Fires comes The Blacktongue Thief, the story of professional thief Kinch Na Shannack. No, literally. He has a degree (sort of). He went to college (kind of). He paid for his education from a thieving guild, and now he has legitimate student loans he needs to pay back. If that wasn’t hard enough, he made the mistake of trying to rip off a veteran knight on a first-name basis with the goddess of death. Narrated by the author, Christopher Buehlman himself (just as he did with Between Two Fires), The Blacktongue Thief is a twisty tale of larceny gone wrong. It’s like Grand Theft Auto in a Dungeons & Dragons world, and the author knocks the audiobook out of the park.
A new study by PEN America, which protects freedom of expression and champions authors in the United States and worldwide, has found that book bans in U.S. public school districts are increasing alarmingly. In the 2022/2023 school year, PEN uncovered 3,362 instances of book banning. In the 2023/2024 school year, that number rose to 10,046.
Book bans have been a hot-button issue in the States since roughly 2021, as conservative Republican parents, educators, and government officials have lobbied to remove access to books they deem “inappropriate” for children and young adults. While these campaigners often demonize anything related to “sexual content,” including strictly educational material, many of the books targeted by these book ban initiatives are, sadly, stories and nonfiction works focused on minorities—specifically people of color, members of the LGBTQ+ community, and those with disabilities.
It’s very nearly time. English author and TV presenter Richard Osman’s worldwide bestselling murder mystery novel, The Thursday Murder Club, is officially being adapted into a movie, and we can’t wait to meet these four loveable pensioners on the small screen (maybe the big screen, too? Fingers crossed).
There are four Thursday Murder Club books (so far), so who knows? We might be in for four movie adaptations—I certainly hope so. Though the film has faced some delays following the COVID-19 pandemic and the 2023 strikes in Hollywood, Netflix has confirmed that their co-production with Amblin finished filming last year, so hopefully, we won’t have to wait much longer for a release date.
History repeatedly shows that men in power are forgiven for their past mistakes while women are judged harshly for the rest of their lives and beyond. Julius Caesar’s legacy is that of a brilliant leader, while Cleopatra is reduced to an evil temptress. Monica Lewinsky knows this phenomenon well and discussed it on Alex Cooper’s “Call Her Daddy” podcast.
In 1995, Lewinsky, a 22-year-old intern at the White House, embarked on an almost two-year affair with married President Bill Clinton, which came to light in 1998. Lewinsky was used as a pawn in a political scheme to take the commander-in-chief down.
When the truth came out, instead of coming clean, Clinton doubled down and lied to the American people to protect his legacy. Ultimately, he was impeached by the House of Representatives, acquitted in 1999, and allowed to finish out his second term. Much like Cleopatra, Lewinsky was painted as a villain in the story.
Lewinsky believes the revelation should have been handled differently. On the podcast, she said, “I think that the right way to handle a situation like that would have been to probably say it was nobody’s business and to resign, or to find a way of staying in office that was not lying and not throwing a young person who is just starting out in the world under the bus,” she mused. “At the same time, I’m hearing myself say that, and it’s like, ‘OK, but we’re also talking about the most powerful office in the world.’ I don’t want to be naïve either.”
As if we couldn’t already be more hyped for the return of our favorite Hell’s Kitchen masked vigilante!
Season one of the highly-anticipated Daredevil: Born Again Disney+ series premieres next week on March 4. It can’t come fast enough, especially for those of us who have been waiting since Netflix originally canceled the show nearly six years ago. When it was put on pause due to the 2023 writer’s strike, it underwent a creative overhaul after it was determined that certain elements of the show as-is weren’t working. Thankfully, it seems like a rewrite has worked for once, as the new series has had nothing short of sensational reviews so far.
While the release of the Jeffrey Epstein files didn’t bring any huge revelations, it did confirm that Donald Trump was, indeed, on his flight logs.
Trump started teasing the release of the Epstein files during his presidential campaign. Once in office, Attorney General Pam Bondi expressed interest in bringing the idea to fruition as she promised to release them. Sex offender Epstein died in prison while awaiting trial for charges of sex trafficking. For years, many have longed to know the names of every powerful individual involved with Epstein.
President Donald Trump and President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyy had an intense meeting at the Oval Office. During that meeting, Trump made a few disgusting remarks directed towards the ongoing war between Russia and Ukraine.
For many, it was no surprise that Donald Trump and J.D. Vance decided to insult Ukraine on national television. In what world would either of those men go against Vladimir Putin?
But the response to the meeting of Trump, Vance, and President Zelenskyy has now been toted as showing Trump and Vance’s “nuclear disrespect” for Ukraine. The war began between Russia and Ukraine when Putin decided during the 2022 Olympics to order Russian troops into Ukrainian territories. At the time, under Joe Biden’s administration, the United States shared their support for Ukraine and sent help to the smaller country.
Good News is a weekly collection of stories from this week about things that were actually pretty nice. From pop culture to maybe even some politics, we all deserve a dose of good news.
This week: Elon Musk and Donald Trump get a taste of their own AI-induced medicine, Costco distinguishes itself by actively standing up for DEI, Pokémon fans get exciting news, and more.
Karla Sofía Gascón has become a big problem for the Academy since her historic hate tweets were revealed to the world.
Earlier this year, Emilia Pérez’s Gascón made history as the first transgender woman nominated for an acting Oscar. However, people’s joy at her success was short-lived, because journalist Sarah Hagi then dug up a lot of old, extremely nasty tweets from Gascón. In the messages, Gascón expresses disdain and hatred for Islam, as well as for the diversity of past Oscar ceremonies. People were appalled.
After trying to rewrite history to blame Ukraine and its president, Volodymyr Zelenskyy, for Russia’s invasion, Donald Trump embarrassingly tried to walk back his unhinged claim that Zelenskyy is a dictator.
Trump promised during his campaign that he would end the Russo-Ukraine War, though many feared what this resolution would mean when he has always been chummy with Russia’s Vladimir Putin and hostile towards Ukraine. His true plans started coming out, as his Secretary of Defense, Pete Hegseth, suggested the door was closed on Ukraine joining NATO and only discussed Ukraine making concessions in peace negotiations. Most recently, Trump outright displayed his desire to rewrite history as he began painting Ukraine as the perpetrator of the war. It’s a beyond absurd allegation to make, considering Russia invaded Ukraine unprovoked. He even tried to twist the facts to claim Zelenskyy is a “dictator without elections.” While it’s true that another presidential election is overdue, the country has been under martial law due to the crisis of Russia’s invasion.
Season 2 of 1923 has finally hit Paramount+ screens on Feb. 23, picking up a year after that jaw-dropping cliffhanger left us all worried about Spencer and Alex’s future. So, what twists and turns await the couple in the new season? Julia Schlaepfer is dropping some tantalizing hints.
In the gripping finale of 1923 season 1, tragedy strikes across multiple fronts. Zane, the loyal Dutton ranch foreman, is brutally beaten by police, and his wife, Alice, is arrested under miscegenation laws. The Dutton family also faces yet another blow as Whitfield enters to reveal he has paid their property tax, setting a cruel ultimatum: if they fail to repay him by year’s end, their land will fall into his hands.
