The Supreme Court’s ruling Wednesday in Oklahoma v. Castro-Huerta dealt a heavy blow to the authority of tribes to govern their own lands, federal Indian law experts and tribal leaders said. Some experts fear states would usurp the hard-won autonomy of tribes to prosecute crimes in a community-based way that meets the needs of their own citizens. "As a citizen of a tribal nation, I feel violated," one legal expert said of the court’s ruling. |
