The tale of LSU DB Denver Harris

First Denver Harris got away from LSU and signed with Texas A&M.

Then he came back.

Then it looked like he was off the team, seemingly for good.

But second chances sometimes turn into thirds. Wednesday, LSU coach Brian Kelly told reporters that Harris had some "personal matters" to attend to and that he might return to the team in time for Saturday's key situational scrimmage in Tiger Stadium.

LSU needs Harris, a former five-star prospect from Houston. The Tigers are short of cornerbacks in their again rebuilt secondary and few if any LSU has on the roster are as talented as him.

That said, the Tigers don't need a disruptive force, no matter how talented. Harris was twice suspended at A&M, reportedly once for violating curfew and the other time for a locker room altercation. Harris was apparently recently involved in an on-field fight at an LSU practice, perhaps one of the reasons he was languishing well down the LSU depth chart though the Tigers could use him as a starter.

Will anything change in a meaningful way for Harris from Saturday to LSU's Sept. 3 season opener against Florida State? It's one of the deeper more important questions of LSU's preseason camp.

Our Leah Vann has her observations from Wednesday's practice of the players who did get their workout in, among them defensive tackle Maason Smith. He's one of the most closely watched Tigers this August because he missed all but a few plays last season with a knee injury. And I've got a column on my thoughts about some of the more important players and issues from the first half of preseason camp.

One of the players who has been contributing in a big way to the secondary and is one of the most notable surprises of camp has been cornerback Ashton Stamps. Reed Darcey has a feature on him.

The LSU men's basketball non-conference schedule was released Wednesday, certainly with a couple of interesting opponents on it. Sheldon Mickles has a report.

Women's basketball star Angel Reese continues to have a big splashy offseason. The SI swimsuit model is now featured in the latest issue of Harper's Bazaar.

Finally, LSU men's golfer Connor Gaunt has advanced to the round of 32 in the U.S. Amateur outside Denver. He resumes play Thursday.

Thanks for reading and subscribing. You're a five-star prospect to us. Maybe even a six.

Until next time,

Scott Rabalais
