WHATEVER IT TAKES: After the 2021 Carnival parades were canceled because of the pandemic, participants seem willing to do whatever it takes to roll this year. City Hall is requiring that all float riders, dancers, marching band musicians and other parade participants be vaccinated or test negative for the coronavirus in the 72 hours before the procession, and some krewes are going beyond that.
FUSILLADE: As many as 80 bullets were fired from two rifles and a pistol, a law enforcement source said, in an attack that wounded two women in a car in Uptown New Orleans. Unconfirmed reports had it that the gunfire began on South Claiborne Avenue at Audubon Boulevard, continued a mile downriver inside the Walgreens drugstore at 4400 S. Claiborne and ended across the street at the CVS drugstore at 4401 S. Claiborne.
'AS ONE' NO MORE: Four years ago, Ben Zahn was riding high. Elected Kenner mayor with 80% of the vote, he pledged that the City Council, the police chief and his administration would work "as one" to move Kenner forward. Since then, however, Zahn has faced a crippling pandemic, a devastating hurricane and a series of bitter feuds that cost him political allies and brought a formidable challenger to his reelection campaign. As qualifying ended last week for the March 26 ballot, the roiling tumult left Zahn facing the stiffest test of any Kenner incumbent since 2006.
