Tens of thousands of Minnesota kids from 5 to 12 have been vaccinated in their first month of eligibility for COVID shots. Gov. Tim Walz said Tuesday that’s at least 1 in 4 elementary school aged kids in Minnesota.

According to state officials, Minnesota is currently first in the Midwest and sixth in the nation for the percentage of children vaccinated. They say more than 128,000 children have received at least one dose of the vaccine and 9 percent are fully vaccinated.

In a statement, Walz said he is proud the state is leading the Midwest in vaccinations. He said the most important thing a person can do this holiday season is to protect their family from the virus. He also encouraged all residents to get their children vaccinated.
