with Drew Broach There's good on the coronavirus front. Although Louisiana is grappling with the third wave of the pandemic, its doctors and nurses are better equipped to help COVID-19 patients, having learned from the dire surges of the spring and July. Health care professionals said hard-won experience and improved treatment plans mean people who receive treatment are less likely to die. In the current early voting period for the Dec. 5 election, the New Orleans electorate is being asked to reconfigure five soon-to-expire property taxes into four new ones, leaving the overall tax level the same but altering how much funding various services and functions receive. The complex tax swap would boost funding for infrastructure, economic development, affordable housing and early childhood education, but at the expense of public libraries. Between staying well and voting, take some time to brainstorm how you will celebrate Carnival without parades in New Orleans. We've got an early look at some alternatives, including outdoor displays, scavenger hunts, home decoration and drive-by experiences. All that and more are in today’s Front Page. Thanks for starting your day with us. D.B. |
