Friend,

This spring, President Biden signed a bill into law that would force TikTok's Chinese owner, ByteDance, to divest its holdings of the popular social-media site or face an effective ban in the United States.1

You might not like TikTok, and you might have concerns over its policies on disinformation and data privacy. But a sell-or-be-banned law targeting one platform runs afoul of the First Amendment and unilaterally closes off spaces where people are connecting and communicating online.

That's why we've joined an amicus brief arguing that the law violates the First Amendment by restricting Americans' right to access information and media from abroad. But we need your support to keep this work going.

According to our records, you haven't donated to Free Press yet. And if you've been waiting for the right time to give, that time is now.

Will you make your first gift of $10, $30 or any amount today? Your donation will help us hit our goal of securing 100 donations this month for the Free Press Legal Fund.

Singling out TikTok for privacy concerns — especially when U.S.-based companies have done just as much to collect, sell, use and abuse our personal information — is a misguided detour from doing what's needed to protect everyone's digital rights.

What's more, TikTok users include a disproportionate number of younger people and people of color, whom traditional media outlets too often ignore or neglect.

It doesn't make sense to single out one platform. We'll continue to fight for the free-speech rights of TikTok's users — and all other social-media users, too.

Are you with us? Make a gift to the Free Press Legal Fund to help us keep up the fight for your rights to connect and communicate no matter the platform.

Thanks so much for your support,

Jenna
