Tornado rakes Arabi, the Mid-City carjacking and Loyola makes history

By Drew Broach | Deputy metro editor

SPRING LOADED: On the third day of spring, a tornado raked northeast across the New Orleans region, destroying houses in Arabi, downing trees and utility poles and killing one person in St. Bernard Parish. Some people were reported trapped in houses, and 16,000 customers lost power. See videos and photos.

FATAL CARJACKING: Had the four teenagers accused of carjacking and killing Linda Frickey, 73, in Mid-City just asked for her vehicle, Frickey's sister said, she likely would have surrendered it and walked away. She was reputed to be that kind, warm and generous.

As Frickey lay dying, one arm severed when her body was dragged down Bienville Street by her stolen vehicle, it took an ambulance 11 minutes from the first 911 call to reach her. And one of the teen suspects, it turns out, had been charged in adult court with aggravated burglary in 2020, during District Attorney Leon Cannizzarro's administration, but Cannizzarro's sucessor, Jason Williams, dropped the charge at what the DA's office said was the victim's request.

HOOPS HISTORY: For the first time since 1945, the Loyola Wolf Pack has won the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics basketball championship, finishing its 37-1 season with a decisive victory over Talladega.
