The trauma of Ahmaud Arbery's shooting and the danger of being a Black runner in America

One year after Ahmaud Arbery was shot and killed while jogging in Brunswick, Georgia, Black runners across America describe how they are still dealing with the tragedy — and how the image of Arbery, 25, stumbling before crashing to the ground remains lodged in their brains.

"Everyone should be safe when they run. But that's not the case," said Tyron Irby, who created #TogetherWeStandNC, a group that generates discussions around race, with Arbery's killing as a conversation starter. "As Black runners, we have to have eyes in the back of our heads. It's a part of being Black in America."
