Firefighters sue: Cleveland’s firefighters say they have sued the city, asking the Cuyahoga County Common Pleas Court to order Mayor Frank Jackson’s administration to dismiss Fire Chief Angelo Calvillo for violating terms of the charter and civil service rules. Cleveland.com’s Robert Higgs reports the suit says Calvillo illegally participated in political activity by helping to circulate candidate-nominating petitions for Jackson’s re-election in 2017. Jail supervisor arrested: A Cuyahoga County Corrections supervisor who pepper-sprayed an inmate strapped to a restraint chair is now accused of extorting a co-worker by threatening to release videos of incidents in the jail if the co-worker refused to give testimony that could support his defense. Cleveland.com’s Adam Ferrise reports the guard is charged with extortion and bribery. Reverse charge: The Public Utilities Commission of Ohio formally reversed a FirstEnergy charge Thursday that the Ohio Supreme Court had determined was improper, but cleveland.com’s Laura Hancock reports customers will see only a refund of a fraction of the hundreds of millions of dollars collected. Officer background: A Cleveland police officer accused of recording himself urinating on a 12-year-old girl was involved in the fatal shooting of two men while he worked as a security guard in 2011, cleveland.com’s Adam Ferrise reports. Solomon Nhiwatiwa, 34, and another security guard fired shots during a 2011 melee at a Cleveland nightclub that resulted in the deaths of Alexander Burkes and Roosevelt Guins, according to court records. Robocalls: A dozen phone companies in Ohio and around the nation have promised to help crack down on robocalls by identifying the source of the calls and deploying anti-spoofing technology, under an agreement reached with attorneys general in Ohio and other states. Cleveland.com’s Jeremy Pelzer reports the deal marks the first time that so many carriers have come together to agree to fight annoying and often illegal robocalls. Lake Erie Water Trail: To satisfy the growing paddle-sports community, Cleveland Metroparks are working with cities across Cuyahoga County’s waterfront to create an official Lake Erie Water Trail, with a map, signage and marked access points.
