Say Yes: Cleveland’s Say Yes to Education effort would get $242,000 in first-year funding from Cuyahoga County under legislation introduced Tuesday to County Council. Cleveland.com’s Courtney Astolfi reports the legislation also outlines a tentative plan for the county to contribute $3.6 million over four years to Say Yes, the nonprofit that aims to help Cleveland transform its public schools. Heartless Felons: The founder of the Heartless Felons gang, now an employee of the Cleveland street department, is accused of threatening a co-worker who reported him for failing to show up for work. Sign up here Abortion lawsuit: Ohio Attorney General Dave Yost and Planned Parenthood lawyers, who are on the opposite sides of an abortion lawsuit, jointly requested a postponement while a similar case in Kentucky is decided, cleveland.com’s Laura Hancock reports. Planned Parenthood and other abortion-rights supporters are challenging a state law that bans an abortion method called dilation and evacuation, the most common method for second-trimester abortions. Family ties: Cuyahoga County Executive Armond Budish is expected to withdraw legislation that would have weakened the county’s nepotism rules and allowed Budish to promote a sheriff’s department captain to interim chief deputy, cleveland.com’s Courtney Astolfi reports. The legislation that Budish introduced in April would have narrowed the definition of “relative” so an employee could oversee uncles, aunts, nephews, nieces, first cousins or household members of an employee’s spouse. Voters’ choice: Three of Cuyahoga County’s top criminal justice officials tell County Council they favor a proposed charter amendment that would return the position of sheriff to an elected office, according to cleveland.com’s Courtney Astolfi. Under the county’s voter-approved move to a charter government a decade ago, the sheriff became an appointee of the county executive. Jail sued again: The family of Robin Arraj, 51, of Broadview Heights, is suing Cuyahoga County, saying the inaction of county’s jail staff to her medical issues led to her death in the jail in 2017. Arraj died while serving a three-day sentence for a drunken-driving conviction, cleveland.com’s Eric Heisig reports. Election conflict: The date of the 2020 presidential primary election, nestled into the Ohio Senate’s 3,217-page state budget, has come up as a potential area of disagreement, cleveland.com’s Andrew J. Tobias reports. That’s because the Ohio Senate set the election for March 17, 2020 — St. Patrick’s Day. Cleveland’s St. Patrick’s Day celebration draws massive, sometimes raucous crowds and officials are worried it could disrupt voting. Review on the play: U.S. Senators Elizabeth Warren, Bernie Sanders and Cory Booker are asking the FCC and the Department of Justice to review Sinclair’s pending acquisition of 21 regional sports networks, which include Fox Sports Ohio and Sports Time Ohio, cleveland.com’s Joey Morona reports. Browns in court: Court records show the Browns have asked a local judge to force a New York-based maker of caffeinated drinks to cough up more than $500,000 after the company failed to make a payment on a sponsorship deal signed last year, cleveland.com’s Cory Shaffer reports. On delay: A proposal to band together cities and counties to negotiate with drug companies they’re suing over the opioid epidemic was put on hold Tuesday, cleveland.com’s Eric Heisig reports. The proposal’s architects asked for more time to address concerns, including those laid out by dozens of attorneys general for states and U.S. territories who undertook their own litigation and settlement efforts. Harvey helps Kent students: Talk show host Steve Harvey is working with Kent State University to provide scholarships to cover full cost of attendance for eight incoming freshmen at about $23,000 each, cleveland.com’s Emily Bamforth reports. The scholarships are in honor of Devin Moore, a senior who suddenly died while playing basketball at the school’s rec center in 2017. Come sail away: Nineteen Cleveland teenagers returned home Wednesday after a weeklong sail from Milwaukee on the tall ship Denis Sullivan, sponsored by the Rotary Club of Cleveland. Cleveland.com’s Laura Johnston has photos of the ship, which will be featured at Tall Ships Cleveland July 11-14. Celebrity softball: Get ready to see some of your favorite celebs swinging for the fences. The MLB Celebrity Softball Game has set the rosters for this year’s game in Cleveland.
