Ohio General Assembly passes firearms bill without ‘stand your ground’ provisions: The Ohio General Assembly passed a firearm bill Thursday, but with a removed provision commonly known as “stand your ground” that had been in the original version of the legislation. The bill now heads to Gov. John Kasich, who had vowed to veto a stand-your-ground measure. It’s unclear what he will do now that the bill has changed. Current Ohio law states gun owners have a duty to retreat if possible before using self-defense in a life-threatening situation. The provision that was removed would have eliminated that duty. Ohio senators delay vote on abortion ‘heartbeat bill’: Time is running out on a controversial bill banning abortions when a fetal heartbeat is detected, raising questions about whether the measure will become Ohio law. Ohio Senate Health, Human Services and Medicaid Committee Chairman Sen. David Burke says there are several amendments to the bill and lawmakers need more time to study them. Supporters hope that, with even more Republicans in the Ohio General Assembly than two years ago, there are enough votes to override a veto by Gov. John Kasich. Now that plan is in question. City’s slow response to airport security breach prevented corrective action, TSA says: The city waited 20 hours to notify the federal government that two high-ranking city officials had breached security at Cleveland Hopkins International Airport, a delay that made immediate corrective action impossible, Transportation Security Administration officials say. TSA officials also dispute a claim by city spokesman Dan Williams that TSA had advised the city’s report on the incident must be kept secret from the public because it contained information about airport security. Appeals court rules ICE can detain immigrants granted bond in simultaneous cases: An appeals court has ruled that U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement can detain a Painesville man currently free on bond in a criminal case and awaiting deportation in a separate criminal proceeding. The ruling clears the way for ICE to arrest Cesar Veloz-Alonso, a 39-year-old construction worker and married father of three who pleaded guilty in October to illegal re-entry to the U.S. from Mexico. The ruling overturns an order issued in October by a U.S. district judge which threatened immigration officials with contempt if they detained and deported the man before he was sentenced in a criminal case.
