The Washington Post Expects International Ad Revenue to Grow 50% This Year

Good morning!

I'm Scott Nover, filling in for the wonderful Lucinda Southern, who is taking a much-deserved day off.

Lucinda, who is based in England, checked in with The Washington Post about its lofty international ambitions.

The company is expanding its non-U.S. staff by 44 journalists in 2021 and expects its total international staff to increase by 50% this year. The Post will support this move with four breaking news hubs around the world—in addition to its established operations in London and Seoul—the Post will add two new hubs in Australia and Colombia by the end of the year.

Read more from Lucinda's conversation with The Post's Sara Sorcher along with outside perspectives about The Post's evolving international businesses.

In case you missed it, I also wrote a rundown of the latest Big Tech hearings. The House of Representatives called Facebook's Mark Zuckerberg, Google's Sundar Pichai and Twitter's Jack Dorsey to testify about misinformation.

Misinformation online is a problem for society—with real-world ramifications—but it's also a business problem. That's how Dorsey framed it, at least, saying that without any content moderation, Twitter would be a place that no user or advertiser would go near.

Read more about the back-and-forth on Capitol Hill (well, virtually on Capitol Hill) and the legislative chatter about changing platforms' liability protections.

That's all for today! Thanks for reading! Lucinda will be back tomorrow.
