Hi there,

This week Kenya's government attempted to close two NGOs against a backdrop of draft legislation that could further stunt the work of civil society groups.

We called on Kenyan authorities to safeguard organisations that promote good governance in the country, and condemned raids on civil society groups.

“The constitution of Kenya guarantees freedom of association and the government cannot use illegal means to silence civil society. Civil society must be protected. These moves go against the spirit of the constitution and are not in the people’s interests,” said José Ugaz, Chair of Transparency International.

The subsequent international outcry prompted the Acting Interior Cabinet Secretary to temporarily suspend the clampdown.

Samuel Kimeu, Executive Director of Transparency International Kenya, added: "We call on the government to stop this harassment. If the government considers there are legitimate non-compliance issues, there are established ways of dealing with this without undermining the freedom of association enshrined in our constitution."
