The Esoteric Economics Of Burning Man

This weekend, 70,000 self-proclaimed "Burners" will hit the playa in the Nevada desert for the storied Burning Man Festival. For the next week or so, creativity will reign, Instagram will explode and think pieces will abound about the “true nature of burning man.” A debate made possible, we think, because the economics that underpin Burning Man are almost tailor-made to yield conflicting opinions.

Online Platforms: Why Consumers Rule And Regulators Don’t

Seventy-two years ago, the courts ruled that the largest retailer in the world — The Great Atlantic & Pacific Tea Company — violated antitrust laws, and for a very peculiar reason: Its innovations lowered prices for consumers. Shoppers weren’t complaining, but competitors were. That verdict did little to stop the A&P train, until 30 years later when something else did: the consumer.
