This Weekend’s $25B Shopping Event

Singles Day has come a long way from its first iteration in 2009, when it was a shopping event comprised of 27 merchants that generated $7 million in sales. Last year, the Chinese event featured thousands of global brands and set its latest sales record with revenue of $25 billion. But will this Sunday’s Singles Day eclipse its record for the ninth time — or will a slower economy and a looming trade war break the streak?

The Apple iPhone Sales Rope-A-Dope

Apple is taking some major heat after it announced last week that it would no longer report unit sales of iPhones and other devices. Karen Webster conjectures it’s part of a carefully planned strategy to shift the focus away from how it intends to boost the Services revenue to fill the gap. Just like Ali’s famous Rumble in the Jungle Rope-A-Dope, she says, be prepared for Apple to come out swinging with the most powerful punch it has: eventually taxing any and all of the apps in its powerful apps ecosystem.
