Today marks the 12th anniversary of Michael Phelps’ come-from-behind triumph over Serbia’s Milorad Cavic in the 100-meter butterfly at the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing. With a half-stroke at the finish, Phelps defeated Cavic by the slimmest of margins, 50.58 to 50.59. The victory was the seventh of the week for Phelps, and tied him with Mark Spitz for the most gold medals in a single Olympiad. Gregorio Paltrinieri Wins 10km Open Water Days After Rattling 1500 Free World Record

Gregorio Paltrinieri continued his fine form as he won the 10km open water at the Campionato Italiano Assoluto days after rattling Sun Yang‘s world record in the 1500 free with the second-fastest swim in history.

Arianna Bridi won the women’s race in the first event of the championships at which the opening two days are being held at Piombino with Marina di Grosseto staging the 5km races on Friday.
