Memo to NCAA: Say No to Iowa as Men’s Swim Champs Host

Stripping NCAA Men’s Swim Champs From Iowa is Only Answer to School’s Disrespect

The University of Iowa made the shocking decision on Friday to cut its men’s and women’s swim teams at the end of the 2020-21 season. It was the fifth time a Division I school axed its swim team this offseason during the COVID-19 pandemic, following decisions from East Carolina, Connecticut, Boise State and Dartmouth. Iowa became the first power five school to make the decision.

It was a stunning move for the rest of the NCAA, especially those in the Big Ten family, as the Hawkeyes are charter members of the conference that was formed more than 100 years ago.

Iowa is set to host the men’s NCAA meet this coming season, making the national championships the last meet the Hawkeyes would ever host.

The meet should never make its way to Iowa City.

Based on Barta’s comments, the 2021 NCAA meet may be moving to a new location. There are a lot of factors that still need to be considered, first and foremost being the status of the 2020-21 winter sports season. The second (and third) outstanding question is which city can host the NCAA meet on such short notice, and is it financially feasible to move the meet at such late notice?

16 Unspoken Swimmer Laws

Once, during a meet, I had a revelation. After almost being jumped on by one of my teammates during warmup, I thought to myself, “Wow, he’s really breaking a norm right now.” Then I realized the way swim meets and swim practices run are basically just dependent on a bunch of unspoken swimmer laws that help things flow and prevent fights from breaking out.

Here’s a list of some of the unspoken swimmer laws that most swimmers abide by.
