Swimming Community Starts to Move Forward;
Interns Needed for Summer

USA Swimming Unveils Revamped Schedule; Athletes Can Start Planning

With the Olympic Games officially being pushed back a year to avoid safety issues with the coronavirus pandemic, an entire sporting calendar needed to be shifted. USA Swimming officially moved its Olympic Trials earlier this month to June 13 – 20. On Monday, USA Swimming President & CEO Tim Hinchey sent a letter to members detailing the tentative dates for the 2020-21 national events schedule.

If the virus is under control by the end of the summer, then USA Swimming will introduce 14 – 16 regional events in mid to late August. Speedo Sectionals, Futures and the Speedo Summer Championships have been cancelled for this summer in order to refocus on introducing a new series of summer events.

Swimming Parents: Top-10 Ways They Can Get Under a Coach’s Skin

“My idea of coaching heaven is to have a ten lane, world-class swimming facility, with a fully equipped, professional quality gymnasium and a state of the art recovery centre built right alongside the world’s biggest orphanage.”

Why would someone with Olympic Gold medal, world record and world championship level coaching credentials feel so strongly about the challenges of working with swimming parents?

It should be relatively straight forward: coaches coach; swimmers swim, parents parent. Not that all that complicated really. This is not a thesis on thermodynamics – it’s just three groups of people working together to achieve a common goal – to help a swimmer realize their full potential.

USA Swimming Presents Virtual Meet Guidelines

USA Swimming has put together guidelines for virtual meets to be sanctioned. In light of the massive affects of the coronavirus pandemic, the governing body is looking at options.

These kinds of meets have happened before in times of severe weather and other factors, but with the need for social distancing and limited crowd size, it is something that might become more prevalent.

No USA Swimming meet will be sanctioned until June.

Virtual meets will give clubs the opportunity to swim in their own pool but compete against other clubs, swimming in their own pool. This means intrasquad meets can now be sanctioned if other teams are doing the same thing virtually, set up through USA Swimming.

USA Swimming Announces Strategic Recovery Plan with $1 Million in Grants

USA Swimming on Tuesday announced a strategic recovery plan to extend resources, both logistical and financial, to clubs struggling during the COVID-19 crisis.

The initial pledge from USA Swimming is a minimum of $1 million in grants, funded by the USA Swimming Foundation, to support clubs and members in precarious financial positions among the local swimming committees (LSCs). Grant applications, which go directly through USA Swimming’s COVID-19 Relief Program for Teams, will progress in two phases.

The first phase covers “immediate need to clubs in current financial peril,” while the second phase aims to help clubs reopen once the pandemic lifts, aimed at occurring later this year.

Relief grants will be as much as $5,000 with an expected average amount of $3,000. They are designed to replace lost anticipated revenue from cancellations this summer and offset operating expenses that clubs cannot defer even without swimmers/events.
