The worldwide win: LSU fans celebrate

Where were you when the LSU Tigers beat Alabama?

More than likely, about 10 years from now about half a million of you will be saying you were right there in Tiger Stadium, you knew LSU would beat Bama all along, and you always knew Jayden Daniels was the one.

Yeah, yeah, yeah.

Truth is, there were about 100,000 folks in Tiger Stadium this past Saturday night when LSU beat Alabama 32-31 in overtime. But there were countless thousands more watching and keeping track all around the world. Our Leah Vann put out the call earlier this week for fans' personal stories of the game and came up with a feature full of memories that were poignant and precious.

I have a feeling you're all going to love this one — and that if you didn't, you're going to wish you'd emailed Leah your story about the game.

Don't worry. You can respond the next time LSU takes down Nick Saban with a dramatic overtime two-point conversion.

Let's step away from football for a moment and put the spotlight on basketball, as Wednesday was a headline-grabbing day for the LSU programs.

Kim Mulkey's women's basketball team signed what ESPN rated as the nation's No. 1 recruiting class on Wednesday, including arguably the nation's top player, Mikaylah Williams from Bossier City. On the court, the men's basketball team opened the Matt McMahon era with a sluggish but ultimately successful 74-63 win over the Kansas City 'Roos.

Yes, that's a real team.

Back to football and LSU's big game this Saturday at Arkansas (11 a.m., ESPN). Razorbacks starting quarterback KJ Jefferson is injured and Arkansas coach Sam Pittman described his team's quarterback situation as "fluid" going into Saturday's frigid game in Fayetteville.

"Fluid" is a good word for lakes and rivers and mixed drinks at your tailgate party. Not at quarterback when a top-10 team like LSU is at your doorstep, breathing steam into the chilly Ozark air.

LSU (7-2, 5-1 SEC) is trying to keep winning to: 1. Win the SEC West, 2. Reach the SEC Championship Game, and 3. Stay in dark horse contention for a CFP berth. Once the season is over, bowl projections that once had the Tigers not going to a bowl at all now have them in almost unanimously in one of the non-playoff New Year's Six bowls: the Sugar, Orange and Cotton (not the Rose, which this year is strictly old school Big Ten vs. Pac-12). Brett McMurphy, a heck of a college football newsman and my son Nick's personal swing coach (long story, another newsletter), this week picked LSU to play Tulane in the Cotton Bowl. What a wild outcome that would be.

Wednesday wasn't just the start of the signing period for women's basketball. LSU men's basketball signed a pair of highly regarded players, as did the LSU gymnastics team.

Finally, I've got my five memorable games from this most colorful rivalry betwen LSU and Arkansas.

Thanks for reading. We're here every week with great LSU sports coverage, so tune in tomorrow.
