The Teatro de la Zarzuela opens its new season with LAS GOLONDRINAS. In Las golondrinas (The Swallows), José María Usandizaga (composer) worked with the best pair of libretto writers of the day, Gregorio Martínez Sierra and his wife, María de la O Lejárraga. The work had its première as a zarzuela back in 1914, and later, after the death of the composer, his brother Ramón composed the music for the spoken fragments in order to present the work as an opera in 1929. This latter work is the one we are now concerned with. The text’s authors wrote a poignant, poetic story of circus acrobats, which they later adapted as a lyrical text at the request of the young Basque composer.
