Not only is it a shock that our body has been invaded by rampant and detrimental cell growth. It’s also a shock to our emotions and our mental well-being in loss of control, fear of death, and many other complicated feelings. Cancer patients need more than surgical and other physical treatment. They also need mental and emotional support. And in many cases where patients are struggling financially, something as simple as a care pack goes a long way. As a loyal supporter of CANSA’s services I know that you’ll understand the importance of our psycho-social programme. And perhaps you’ll click here now to make your donation to keep supporting people living with cancer. The psycho-social support programme begins with acknowledging the distress being felt by cancer patients and their families. And then addressing it in the following ways: Due to cancer patients being at high risk for developing Covid-related complications, face-to-face counselling has become more limited, with tele-counselling taking its place. CANSA Tele Counselling is free and support like yours allows us to reach people throughout the country, regardless of where they live, what language they speak, their state of health or financial situation. Sometimes a client’s problem can be solved in one session, but more complex situations can require months of counselling. We also recommend support groups to patients and families. Previously conducted face-to- face, we’ve again had to revert to technology. Most of our 36 support groups countrywide are now operating via WhatsApp and social media. Our psycho-social outreach also includes webinars, open to all, which deal with important information related to cancer. I wish I could also say that this vital service also comes free to CANSA as an organisation – but it doesn’t. Beyond the input of our wonderful volunteers, outside service providers have to be paid (even if they generously discount their prices). What I can say, is that the psycho-social support programme and all our other services wouldn’t happen if there were not friends like you who donate – as well as giving the special gifts of your compassion, understanding, and encouragement. I thank you, most sincerely, for all your past generosity. And I ask you to please consider clicking here to make another donation today – to make a difference in the life of someone living with cancer.
