Plus, why Salt Lake County Mayor Jenny Wilson intends to vote for an independent candidate to serve in Congress rather than a Democrat.
Good morning. Salt Lake City will have a high of 39° and a low of 23°. A winter storm warning is in effect until 5 p.m. Wednesday. My son is growing up in a very different media landscape than I did. Even though the only screen time he gets right now is FaceTime with his grandparents and watching "Bluey" while I try to get 15 uninterrupted minutes to start dinner, it's easy to worry about how to handle screen time as he gets older. So I appreciated Jean M. Twenge's advice about screen time for kids, based on the latest research. And if you're looking for ways to set up screen time and content limits on your kids' devices, my colleague Amy Iverson has some great suggestions. Also on our mind today: Sen. Mike Lee's warning about "the tyranny of expertise," what you need to know about the stronger pollution regulations the Biden administration is proposing and what you can do to help Ukraine. |
| Why northern Utah may be getting drastic water reductions |
|
| | The Weber Basin Water Conservancy District is considering enacting severe reductions for its users this summer. The district — which serves Davis, Weber, Summit, Morgan and Box Elder counties — said it may delay the recharge of its secondary/agricultural system by as much as a month, to mid-May. It also warned that if drought conditions stay the same over the next few weeks, it will enact the following restrictions at the board of trustees’ March 31 meeting: No installation of new landscapes. One day a week watering of lawns and gardens. One day a week hand-watering of established trees and shrubs. No hosing down sidewalks or driveways. Early shutoff of secondary irrigation/agricultural system in mid-September. |

| What's happening: Salt Lake County Mayor Jenny Wilson intends to vote for an independent candidate — Evan McMullin — to serve in Congress rather than a Democrat for the first time this fall. Former Democratic Congressman Ben McAdams also endorsed McMullin and is urging the Democratic Party to not put up a candidate for the 2022 midterm election. Context: McMullin, Democrat Kael Weston, and six Republican challengers — including community and business leader Ally Isom and former state lawmaker Becky Edwards — are challenging Sen. Mike Lee in the Senate race. Why: In a time of extreme partisanship, Wilson said she’s excited to see where a senator who places Utah before party can take the state, and perhaps lead to more independent voices serving the country in the future. “We are at a critical juncture, and I believe Democrats and Republicans need to choose to put duty to country before duty to party,” Wilson said. The other side: Weston, the only Democratic candidate in the U.S. Senate race, might not get on the ballot at all if some in the party, including Wilson, get their way. Weston has called the effort to squeeze him out as a candidate “fundamentally disenfranchising.” Read more about the Senate race for Lee's seat.
