When pro snowboarder Austin Smith was approached by Red Bull with a contract offer, he turned down the offer because he didn't want to encourage people, kids especially, to drink extensive amounts of sugar and caffeine.
Instead, Smith and another professional snowboarder, Bryan Fox, decided to team up to promote what they say is the original energy drink: water.
Stephen Fox, Bryan's brother, is the marketing director for a national brand called Drink Water, a for-profit business with the stated purpose of encouraging people to drink water.
Soon, Stephen's garage at his home in Park City became Drink Water’s distribution headquarters, where he ships merch promoting their message.
“It’s not about selling water. We’re committed to never sell water. We prefer it from the tap,” their mission statement proclaims on their website.
