Why is traffice so bad in Baton Rouge?

If there is one constant complaint every Baton Rouge resident can agree on, it’s traffic.

For years, residents have griped about the bumper-to-bumper congestion, especially in pain points around College Drive, Perkins Road, Acadian Thruway and Essen Lane. Blame has been cast on construction, traffic light problems and just plain old bad driving.

It isn't just people's imagination either. Baton Rouge ranked 27th highest for city congestion in the U.S. and 161st globally in 2023, according to INRIX's Global Traffic Scorecard. The transportation analytics company reported that Baton Rouge residents lost 36 hours on average sitting in traffic that year, costing $635 per driver in wasted time.
