(here's how I avoid it and you can too)

The medical definition of a heavy drinker is 15 drinks per week for a man (8 for a woman).


Back when I was 25, I called 15 drinks “Saturday night”.


Fortunately, I’ve come a long way from those days.


But last week I was speaking with a friend that “averaged two drinks a night”.


This puts him on the verge of being an alcoholic, and at risk of everything from liver disease to colon cancer to cardiovascular disease.


My father, a 10-beer-per-day alcoholic, developed colon cancer at around age 62. It spread to his liver and killed him at the age of 69 – preventing him from ever meeting his grandkids.


If you drink too much, this could be your future, unless you decide to change.


Anyone can, everyone must.


That’s why I want to spend a little time today on the topic of health.


A couple weeks ago, I did one of those executive medical assessments. Four hours of tests, blood draws, a little treadmill workout, talking with doctors, checking my skin for melanomas (my biggest worry), etc.


Fun fact: I have a very low resting heart rate ... 40bpm.

The exercise stress test requires you to hit 85% of your maximum heart rate... usually this takes about 9 minutes.

For me, it took 15 minutes and required me running up a 22% incline at 5.5 mph.

"You're as fit as the 20-year old police academy students we test," the technician said.

Good times. 


The only downside is that the hearing test confirmed my suspicion that I'm going deaf in my left ear (complications from a childhood infection).

 
Anyways...


I do this executive medical screening every couple of years. I get my blood work done every 6 months. 

I’ve had two colonoscopies (family history, obviously). Next one is scheduled for 2026.

I share this because every entrepreneur & parent should take their health seriously.


There are no bonus points in life for not going to the doctor. It’s not a badge of honor.


You know who else didn’t go to the doctor for 25 years… my dad.


When my mother literally dragged him into the ER to see the doctor for the first time in 25 years, he was hours away from dying.


Her actions bought him 18 more months… 


But his inaction threw away a decade or more.


Avoiding your health is all fun and games…until it’s not.


“Health is wealth,” is not a cliché.


I learned that the hard way when I had my anxiety attacks in 2006…

There were days I prayed and offered everything I had if I could just feel normal again.


I got lucky, did a LOT of work, found the solutions, and vowed to never let that happen again – to me or to you.


That’s why I holler about health.


I can help you make all the money in the world, but if you don’t have your health, you don’t have wealth.


Time to take it seriously.
