CAM COMMUNITY SPOTLIGHT:

Dr. Acquenetta Wheeler

Dr. Acquenetta Wheeler serves on CAM's Board of Trustees and is a supporter of Jazz at CAM. Dr. Wheeler is a native of Wilmington who had spent several years away attending Fisk University, Meharry Medical College and Johns Hopkins University.

She says, "I was surprised when visiting CAM after returning home that it was such a rich cultural and educational experience. It shares rich history and stories that inspire me to want to learn more. CAM certainly brings people together."

Why do you feel it was important to support the museum, including participation in the special events and sponsorship opportunities such as JAZZ at CAM?

My participation in the events and special programs at CAM is personally important to me as it helps motivate me to learn things outside of my normal everyday activities and routines.

I support the museum because its programs and exhibitions bring a diverse cultural experience to all ages … children and adults… in the Wilmington community and surrounding area.

I love that it creates an opportunity that welcomes all within its walls.

I enjoy many of the exhibitions and diverse programs but especially like the special musical programs such as Jazz at CAM and Thursday Live Music at CAM Café. Being a pediatrician, I am also drawn to the activities specially geared toward children and young adults.

How long have you supported CAM - whether through severing as a board member or becoming a donor?

When I returned to Wilmington, my home town, I supported the museum by attending special events and exhibitions. I also connected with a group of friends who attended the Jazz at CAM series and that helped introduce me to all the experiences that CAM has to offer.

... I support the museum because its programs and exhibitions bring a diverse cultural experience to all ages …

What event at CAM is most memorable to you?

Boundless was the most memorable to me. It brought people from all races and ethnicities together to share, explore, and appreciate the memory of the heroic efforts of the United States Colored Troops during the Civil War.

What was your favorite CAM exhibition?

There are many exhibitions that I have enjoyed over the years however, my most favorite is the annual Illumination exhibit. The beauty of the creations incorporated individual designs, magnificent colors, unique textures within the brilliance of light into many different forms. It is a magnificent display of originals by artists from around the country. Each year I see many new and different displays. Each one seems to shine and spell out in a unique way a sense of HOPE for the world.

Watercolor is known for being the most difficult medium to paint with. This class is designed to push through our fears and find joy in exploring the aspects of what this paint can do. Research how colors can flow together and mix on the paper, create soft edges or hard sharp edges. Let's let the pressure go and concentrate on finding joy in creating. No expectations or pressure. Each class will begin with a demo.

Fearless Color!

Instructor: Carolyn Faulkner

Do you love bright bold colors? Do you love soft muted colors? If so, this class is for you! Learn how to create a harmonious color palette and a contrasting color palette. Decide if you want a painting filled with harmony or a painting using bold contrasts. Learn to work with complimentary colors next to one another and analogous colors used together in the same composition. Your painting can be a garden scene or objects of your choice. I will bring in photos but you can choose from your own as well. Contrast will give your artwork drama and opposition. Harmonious colors are similar. They flow, they are close in hue! Are you the person that wants to blend and get along or are you the rebel that wants to be different? Let your personality explode on your canvas!
