CAM Spotlight: Anne Brennan Retires |
Anne Brennan, Cameron Art Museum’s Executive Director, will be retiring and stepping down from her leadership position on March 31.
Brennan, a Wilmington native, began her career with the museum as Curator and Registrar of Collections in 1990 when it was St. John’s Museum of Art. Her strong connection to St. John’s Museum of Art began early on as a child visitor and then as a volunteer. St. John’s Museum of Art also hosted her first solo art exhibition years later. She was key to the success of the museum when it was renamed to Cameron Art Museum and relocated in 2002. She was named Assistant Director in 2010 and, following a national search, was appointed Executive Director in 2011 where she remained. |
“These precious years in service to the community through Cameron Art Museum have been my greatest honor and joy. With all my heart, I thank you.
And now, with the brilliant leadership and dedication of CAM’s Board of Trustees, and passion and professionalism of CAM’s staff, this next passage in the life of CAM will flourish as an even more extraordinary engagement with people, and engagement with dialogue.
With your continuing support, let’s keep learning together from art, gaining a deeper understanding of ourselves in relation to one another.” - Anne Brennan |
Under the leadership of Brennan, CAM’s collection has expanded to include diverse contemporary artists with North Carolina ties that also contribute to the growing understanding of American art to include Romare Bearden, Beverly Buchanan, Beverly McIver, Lien Truong, Michele Tejuola Turner, and Burk Uzzle.
Brennan’s vision for the museum is expansive and inclusive, and during her tenure she has raised CAM’s relevance to the entire community, reaching out through the work of the Board-led education committee to the Wilmington Housing Authority, New Hanover County Schools, the Resiliency Task Force, and Cape Fear Latinos, among other community organizations. In November 2023, The PNC USCT Park, the nation’s first park dedicated to the United States Colored Troops was unveiled on the Battle of Forks Road historic site on CAM grounds.
An artist first and foremost, Brennan remained dedicated to employing local artists and teaching a variety of genres of art in the Museum School. |
“After 29 years of service to the Cameron Art Museum, we the members of the Board of Trustees wish Anne much success as she contemplates what is next in this journey called life.
The Cameron Art Museum Board of Trustees join Anne in shared excitement for this next chapter of growth and service to all citizens through CAM, an institution so essential in all our lives.”
- Gregory C. Miller, CAM Board of Trustees Chair |
Heather Wilson, CAM’s current Deputy Director, will be named Interim Director as Cameron Art Museum’s Board of Trustees begin an Executive Director search.
Wilson, who has served the museum since she joined CAM staff in 2006, was promoted in 2019 to Deputy Director. |
Anne Brennan and Cameron Art Museum are interchangeable and she will be greatly missed.
Her passion for the arts, education and most of all the community are on full display every day at CAM and will continue to inspire the staff and visitors for generations to come.
The community is encouraged to add their well wishes, gratitude as well as share a memory to a message board HERE. |
