| Join us on Saturday, October 19, from 3:30 to 9:30 PM for the fourth annual FlowILM at Cameron Art Museum. This FREE event (gallery admission applies) is a celebration of light, film and dance, highlighting the intersection of art and science, focusing on local and global water issues.
The DAY begins at 3:30 PM with a selection of 3-minute video works created by artists from around the globe, screening inside CAM’s Weyerhaeuser Reception Hall. Dislocated/Dislocada inspired by the four elements and climate change, these performance videos address the uncertainties and challenges of global warming and its impact on human life and our planet.
Beginning at 4:00 PM the fun moves outside as we welcome a diverse lineup of artists, scientists, local non-profits, along with the UNCW labs/programs. Explore educational and family-oriented activities and art-making throughout the museum grounds.
The fun continues as the sun goes down. Night at Flow ILM is an incredible feast for the senses. Bring a lawn chair or walk the museum grounds as CAM’s exterior comes alive with projections and performance by four artistic teams. Experience live performances, dance, sculpture, installations, and light/sound work inspired by our relationships with water and aquatic ecosystems.
Speaking of feast… Kimchi TacoFritts & Jeremiah’s Italian Ice will be serving along with offerings from CAM Cafe.
Flow ILM will be a day and a night to remember!

Join us for an illuminating artist talk with Thomas Sayre and Rachel Lewis Hilburn. They will explore Sayre’s latest exhibition, Four Walls, and dive into the ideals behind his four large-scale installations. Sayre is best known for his monumental sculptures cast from on-site excavations and his current work includes large-scale paintings made from unconventional materials like tar, smoke, and fire.
Rachel Lewis Hilburn, a journalist with a unique ability to connect with others and delve into their creative processes, will bring her expertise to this conversation. Her experience producing and hosting CoastLine, which featured artists, scholars, and innovators, adds a rich layer to this discussion. Learn More |

Thomas Sayre: Four Walls
Thomas Sayre: Four Walls features new and never exhibited works by American artist Thomas Sayre (American, b. 1950). Each of the four large-scale pieces installed in Cameron Art Museum’s Hughes Wing engage the belief systems and symbols that underpin the ideals of church, nation, and creation. Made of materials that include tar, smoke, fabric gowns, gunshots, welding material, earth and fire, these works invite visitors to draw close and experience the messiness of making, and by analogy, to bear witness to the ways that life invades, entangles, and tarnishes us. | The Work of Their Hands: American Quiltmaking
The Work of Their Hands explores the continuing legacy of quilt-making and the evolution of textile art, starting with traditional quilts made for bed coverings to contemporary fabric artworks by artists including Brittney Boyd Bullock, Celeste Butler, Robin Cowley, Michael James, Precious Lovell, Katie Pasquini Masopust, Carolyn Mazloomi, Mary Pal, Hattie Schmidt, Beverly Smith, The Advocacy Project, and others. | This Batik Workshop uses the traditional batiking processes with tjantings (jan- ting), brushes, and cotton buds. Begin with a drawing of your design then copy onto a silk scarf with hot wax. It is a fun and challenging process that brings some surprises and ends with a beautiful and wearable work of art!
