Exhibition Spotlight:

Design Through Time

A Continuing Dialogue

The true power in an object is its ability to tell a story.

Design Through Time: A Continuing Dialogue features 18th and 19th century North Carolina furniture from the collection of the Museum of Early Southern Decorative Arts (MESDA) and Old Salem, in vivid reinterpretation by three contemporary design teams working in North Carolina today. To further enliven their interior vignettes, the designers chose works of art from the collection of Cameron Art Museum.

The Museum of Early Southern Decorative Arts (MESDA) is the preeminent center for the research and study of Southern decorative arts and material culture. MESDA is home to the most comprehensive collection of southern decorative arts and related research resources in the country. The museum is internationally recognized for its contributions to the study and understanding of the history, decorative arts, and material culture of the American South.

MESDA is part of Old Salem Museums & Gardens, Winston-Salem, NC; a unique living history site that shares the rich, authentic, and diverse cultural history of the early South—with special emphasis on the Moravians in North Carolina, enslaved and free people of African descent, and indigenous peoples of the Southern Woodlands—through the preservation and interpretation of material culture, architecture, and cultural landscapes.

Daniel Ackermann, Old Salem and MESDA Chief Curator and Director of Collections, Research and Archaeology is guest curator for the exhibition: “I think it is critical, as we look to the future, to consider ways that we can promote access, equity and community engagement with our collections in both traditional and new ways. In partnering with Cameron Art Museum, we are able to tell these objects’ stories in new ways through this innovative exhibition.”

Cameron Art Museum is honored to work with MESDA and the design teams on this collaborative exhibition, and warmly thanks Bessie Hanahan & Family for their generous support of this exhibition.
